Do I have the right to terminate my lawyer?
Video Transcript
You can always terminate your lawyer. We don’t recommend it, unless there’s a communication breakdown that is just something that you can’t deal with between the client and the attorney.
The insurance company and/or the opposing attorney will try to take advantage of that to cause somebody’s settlement to be a lot smaller. That’s why you have to you have to work with the attorney. We always recommend that you schedule an appointment with your attorney. Sit down with them. Talk to them about your issues. If they’re not willing to sit down with you, or they’re not willing to talk with you about your case, then yes, terminate them.
Hire another attorney but also set out your expectations with that attorney in terms of communication in terms of what your expectations are. Sometimes relationships just don’t work out, and that’s okay. You don’t need to worry about that, but if an attorney is working on your case and they’re a good, solid attorney with a good, solid firm, then you you really probably want to talk with them about what’s taking so long or why there’s a miscommunication. A lot of times there are reasonable explanations for that, but sometimes there aren’t. And so you have to address it.
